Foundation

Build the base

2–6 months

Focus skills

  • Consistent dink contact in front of the body
  • Serve depth past the NVZ
  • Basic kitchen etiquette and foot fault awareness
  • Ready position: paddle up, knees soft

Milestones

  • 20 consecutive cooperative dinks
  • 70%+ serves land deep (past kitchen + 3 ft)
  • Can play a full game without foot faults

Common blockers

  • Bending from the waist instead of the legs
  • Backing up on every ball
  • Paddle dropping below the waist between shots

Intermediate

Control & placement

4–10 months

Focus skills

  • Third-shot drop as a primary option
  • Cross-court dink preference and patience
  • Reset soft blocks from mid-court
  • Partner communication and court coverage

Milestones

  • Land 6/10 third-shot drops in the kitchen under pressure
  • Win NVZ dink exchanges with intent, not luck
  • Transition from baseline to kitchen without free hands

Common blockers

  • Overhitting drops that sit up
  • Poaching randomly without a plan
  • Ignoring middle balls

Advanced Intermediate

Offense with structure

6–14 months

Focus skills

  • Attack selection: only high balls above net height
  • Speed-ups off dinks with controlled pace
  • Stacking basics and right-side vs left-side roles
  • Serve + third-shot patterns (drop / drive mix)

Milestones

  • Convert 40%+ of high balls into free points
  • Hold serve sequences with intentional patterns
  • Reset speed-ups at kitchen without popping up

Common blockers

  • Attacking balls still rising or below net
  • No plan after speed-up (no follow-up volley)
  • Partner confusion on who takes middle

Systems over shots

12–24 months

  • Full stacking and switch systems
  • Erne / ATP awareness and defense
  • Pressure dinks that force lift
  • Match charting and opponent scouting

Milestones

  • Execute 2–3 set plays from serve and return
  • Defend Ernes and ATPs without free points
  • Maintain composure in 10–10+ game situations

Common blockers

  • Playing hero ball instead of percentage tennis
  • Predictable third-shot every rally
  • Mental collapse after unforced errors

  • Medal at open-level regional events
  • Hold with / against 5.5+ partnerships consistently
  • Video review becomes weekly habit

  • Training volume without recovery
  • No coach or sparring partners at level
  • Inconsistent competition schedule
